Hurst Castle

Hurst Castle is one of the most uniquely situated historic sites in England, standing at the end of a long shingle spit that extends into the Solent. Built by Henry VIII as part of a chain of coastal defenses, the castle has evolved over centuries, playing a vital role in protecting the western entrance to the Solent. The journey to the castle is an adventure in itself; you can either enjoy a scenic 1.5-mile walk along the pebble bank from Keyhaven or take a charming seasonal ferry across the marshes.

Once inside, you can explore the dark, atmospheric Tudor keep where Charles I was once imprisoned and wander through the massive 19th-century West Wing, which still houses heavy Victorian guns. The castle offers some of the best coastal views in the New Forest, with the Needles on the Isle of Wight appearing so close you feel you could almost touch them. It is a fantastic destination for history buffs and families alike, providing plenty of open space for children to explore and learn about Britain’s maritime defense. After your visit, the castle’s café provides a perfect spot to rest before your journey back to our Unrivalled Holiday Homes.
